Clear certification helps buyers determine what a product was tested to do, under which conditions, and whether the claim applies to the complete finished item. For biodegradable food containers, this evidence is more useful than a broad sustainability statement printed on a carton.
A certification normally links a product to a recognized test standard and independent review. In North America, BPI certifies compostable products that meet applicable ASTM standards, including ASTM D6400 or D6868. ASTM D6400 covers plastics intended for aerobic composting in municipal or industrial facilities, while D6868 addresses end items using polymers as coatings or binders.
For European industrial composting claims, EN 13432 is a widely used reference for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation. It examines biodegradation, disintegration, material characteristics, and compost quality.

A raw-material certificate may not cover the finished container. Changes in pigment, coating, adhesive, wall weight, or product structure may fall outside the tested scope. Buyers should therefore compare the ordered SKU with the model number or product family shown on the certificate.
A food-safe package is not automatically compostable. Buyers should request both environmental evidence and food-contact documentation for the target market.
