The terms compostable and biodegradable are often used together, but they are not interchangeable. Compostable food containers are expected to meet defined requirements in a particular composting environment. Biodegradable food boxes may be described more broadly unless the claim identifies a method, timeframe, and disposal condition. The distinction helps buyers compare products accurately.

ASTM D6400 covers plastics and products intended for municipal or industrial aerobic composting. BPI uses recognized ASTM standards when certifying eligible packaging in North America.
In Europe, EN 13432 provides requirements for packaging intended for recovery through composting and biodegradation. Compliance with an industrial composting standard does not mean that an item will behave identically in a backyard pile, landfill, river, or roadside environment.
Home compostability should also not be assumed. Home compost piles generally operate under less controlled conditions than commercial facilities. A product should carry a separate home-compost claim only when that use is supported by suitable testing or certification.
Biodegradation changes with microorganisms, temperature, oxygen, moisture, product thickness, and time. Saying only that a box is biodegradable leaves important questions unanswered: Where will it break down? How long will it take? Does the claim include the lid and coating? Which test supports it?
Biobased describes feedstock origin, while biodegradable and compostable describe end-of-life behavior under particular conditions.
A fossil-derived polymer can be engineered and certified for composting. Buyers should therefore not determine compostability only from references to bagasse, corn starch, bamboo, or petroleum-free content.

The box must still resist heat, oil, moisture, stacking, and delivery movement. A certified package that fails in service creates food waste, while a strong product with an unclear claim creates marketing risk.
The practical difference is the level of definition and evidence. Compostable food containers normally refer to a specific composting pathway supported by recognized criteria. Biodegradable food boxes require more qualification before the buyer knows what the claim means. Clear specifications and matched certificates help an eco packaging wholesaler offer a credible product range.
